Chris Kaman Watch

Today is the NBA trade deadline, as all of you know. As fans of the Heat, you should not be expecting the Miami Heat to be too active today. What you should be watching for is the names that are not traded that could help the Heat later on.

Of those players, none are more important to the Heat then current New Orleans Hornets center Chris Kaman. If he is not traded at the trade deadline, it is expected that he will be bought out by the Hornets and allowed to sign with a contender.

As Ira Winderman tweeted, it would likely come down to Kaman picking between the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics. With the Celtics, Kaman would likely be used in a reserve role. The Celtics are also currently going to need more then just Kaman to become contenders again for a championship.

The Heat currently have Joel Anthony, Dexter Pittman, and Eddy Curry as their centers. That is probably as weak as a center rotation as there is in the NBA. The Heat have shown their desperation for a center several times over the past two weeks.

The first instance was against the Lakers when they could not stop Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol inside. Against the Magic on Tuesday, Dwight Howard owned Joel Anthony and every big man the Heat threw at him, exposing the Heat’s weakness at the center position. The latest instance was when the Heat played the Chicago Bulls last night and likely lost the game by being out hustled and out worked on the boards.

The Heat are still a very sharp championship contender, but they have a major flaw right now. If Kaman is not traded by the NBA’s trade deadline today at 3PM ET, Heat fans should have some hope that our center issues may finally be solved soon!
