According to Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports the Boston Celtics (a.k.a Danny Ainge) apparently considered Scalabrine before deciding on Brad Stevens
“Ainge believes Scalabrine — who is strongly considering an assistant coaching job with the Golden State Warriors — has a future in coaching and talked in broad terms about the job with him, sources said. Nothing ever advanced to a formalized interview, though.”
How fun would having Brian Scalabrine as your head coach be? Wouldn’t you want to play for Brian Scalabrine? I’d sign up in a heartbeat!
Forgot all your Brian Scalabrine highlights? You need not worry.
Let’s not forget though that 99.9% of us would probably be unable to beat Scalabrine one-on-one.
In all seriousness , Scal would be the ultimate player’s coach: he could tell role players “look, I’ve been a role player before — I know what it’s like — keep up the hard work”. He could tell his veteran leaders stories about Kevin Garnett . He even has that sarcastic Popovich press conference attitude.
As a player, Scalabrine was able to connect with teammates and provide great chemistry on pretty much every single team he played on. This ability and talent to generate “good juju” is an extremely valuable asset to have as a coach, especially a head coach. It’s no mistake that Danny Ainge talked to Brian Scalabrine about coaching — I expect to see Scalabrine in a head coaching position sooner rather than later.
