“It’s going to be a long road for me so just talking to [Pat Riley] and talking to the guys, you know they’re going to take it slow for me to start off, and for me that’s a big thing — just getting back off all the injuries I’ve been through,” Oden said.
Oden spoke with the Miami Heat’s team website — you can watch the interview here — and talked about why he decided to join the Heat. It seems Riley had a lot to do with reeling Oden in, of course.
Oden said that the Heat’s visit in Indianapolis to watch him work out was important in his recruitment.
“When they came to Indianapolis, that was a big thing for me. To sit and talk to them, and get to know them, and to hear everything he had to say about me just kind of drew me in to this team,” Oden said.
No surprise that Riley and the Heat can close a deal. Oden was also considering the New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs for some time before deciding to join LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the rest of the “good guys” in the Heat lockerroom. “I’m a good guy and from what I hear everybody’s a great person on this team,” Oden said. “I’m excited. I think I can fit well. From what I hear everybody just wants to win and that’s my main thing is to win and get a championship”
