There has been some confusion as to where Jarvis Varnado will be playing basketball in October.
With a report by the La Gazzetta dello Sport, an Italian publication, that Varnado was close to deal in Italy, the Sun Sentinel spoke with the center’s agent Mitch Frankel about the rumor.
“”Fact is, Jarvis is under contract with the Heat. Jarvis hasn’t accepted any offer from any team in Europe and Jarvis plans on playing for the Heat next year,” Frankel said. “There’s a lot of teams in Europe that have contacted us about Jarvis and his plans.””
Varnado has a non-guaranteed deal that becomes partially guaranteed on opening night on Oct. 29. His roster spot is not a given and the Heat may cut ties with him at any time.
With the Heat signing Greg Oden, Varnado seems to be more expendable. The Heat have 13 players with guaranteed deals. NBA teams can carry a maximum of 20 players for training camp and 15 players in the regular season.
Varnado started his career in Italy in 2010 after being picked in the second round of the NBA Draft out of Mississippi State. He has split time between the Heat and the team’s D-league affiliate the Sioux Falls Skyforce. He was seen on the bench during Miami’s championship run last season.
