The Miami are moving on to the next round of the playoffs and that has many fans wondering where Shane Battier was in the first series of the playoffs. One reason that is being speculated for Battier to missing the first round series is that he is being rested for a potential matchup with Paul Pierce and Joe Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets.
But Ira Winderman dispels that notion by saying Battier may have checked out during the season and may not have earned playoff minutes from Erik Spoelstra.
That obviously wouldn’t be the case against the Nets and Pierce, Johnson or even Shaun Livingston. To a degree, I think Shane somewhat checked out this season amid his plans to retire in the offseason. I also believe Spoelstra has made it clear to Battier that it is imperative to stay in the moment.
Battier will be a valuable asset to the Heat as they march forward with their postseason push for a title but he has been largely unimpressive during the season and while he has been a matchup that teams may not be looking forward to, he hasn’t done much so far to be anything more than a sleeping giant — a giant fast asleep.
