LeBron James may be on his way to a three-peat but there will be some dethroning done this season anyways. While the Heat are unlikely to be dethroned as NBA champions, a report from ESPN states that Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant will be named to 2013-14 MVP, taking the award away from LeBron.
Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant is expected to be named league MVP early next week, according to sources close to the situation. … The most likely scenario is a Monday or Tuesday news conference and a pregame ceremony Tuesday or Wednesday right before Game 1 of the second round of the Western Conference playoffs, provided that Durant’s Thunder win their Game 7 at home Saturday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Thankfully for the Thunder and Durant, Oklahoma City didn’t falter in Game 7 against the Memphis Grizzlies and the MVP award will come in Game 1 against Los Angeles Clippers this week.
Durant winning the award is a bit of a sting for the heat but the bottom line is that the Heat and LeBron are after a third straight title and any individual awards are merely a bonus. LeBron already has a slew of MVP awards and he’s likely not done winning them, so if Durant can’t win a title against LeBron he can at least play with one of his MVP awards in the meantime.
