Report: Miami Heat Interested in Steve Blake, Shawn Marion and Vince Carter

The Miami Heat’s free agent target list includes Steve Blake, Shawn Marion and Vince Carter, according to Sporting News NBA writer Sean Deveney. The interest in Marion and Carter is described as “mutual.”

According to sources, among the players the Heat will pursue are veteran Warriors guard Steve Blake, who can play either guard spot, can knock down 3-pointers and is expected to draw interest from other contenders, like the Thunder.

Another pair of graybeards is also on the Heat list: Shawn Marion of the Mavericks and teammate Vince Carter. Both players have expressed interest in the team, and the feeling is said to be mutual.

The report also mentions Kyle Lowry, Channing Frye, Marvin Williams, Trevor Ariza, DeJaun Blaire and Spencer Hawes. However, it will be difficult to lure the younger players to Miami, who may favor money over winning with some many years left in their careers.

Frye, Williams, Blaire and Hawes are relatively young, but are considered depth players and hardly impact free agents. Lowry or Ariza would be good gets.

The strongest candidates here are Marion and Carter. Those names have been reported already, and continue to pop up. Both are capable scorers and still athletic, but are no doubt in the twilight of their careers.

Pat Riley mentioned adding youth to the roster, but signing either Marion (36) or Carter (37) would make the team older than it is now. Hopefully acquiring Shabazz Napier wasn’t the extent of adding youth to the Heat.
