Possible Heat Target Jameer Nelson Joining Dallas?

The Heat have undergone an impressive rebuilding effort this summer. One possible option rumored to be on Miami’s radar is Jameer Nelson, the 10-year veteran who had been waived by the Orlando Magic in June.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, a meeting with the Dallas Mavericks and Nelson is scheduled to take place on Thursday, possibly removing Nelson from Miami’s shrinking list of free agent options (via Twitter):

Nelson has been linked to Miami as a hope of improving a backcourt tandem that underperformed in last season’s playoffs. Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole both struggled, particularly in the NBA Finals versus the San Antonio Spurs. The Heat drafted Shabazz Napier out of the University of Connecticut with hopes that he could be an immediate contributor but, based on his problems during summer league games, his development seems likely to take some time.

Meanwhile, Nelson started 68 games for the Magic last season and averaged 12.1 points per game, while shooting over 37% from 3-point distance over his career. Scoring and long-range shooting appear to be glaring weaknesses in Miami’s roster.

The Mavs are putting the finishing touches on an impressive offseason, re-signing Dirk Nowitzki, acquiring Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton from the Knicks and signing restricted free agent Chandler Parsons away from the Rockets. Some bad news broke earlier that former Heat player Rashard Lewis, whom the Mavs signed on June 19, would need surgery; Dallas has waived that contract. But the suddenly freed up cap space could benefit Nelson, as Stein added:

According to Stein’s sources, Mo Williams, who spent last season with the Portland Trail Blazers, is also an option for Dallas at point guard.
