Today is the NBA trade deadline, as all of you know. As fans of the Heat, you should not be expecting the Miami Heat to be too active today. What you should be watching for is the names that are not traded that could help the Heat later on.

Of those players, none are more important to the Heat then current New Orleans Hornets center Chris Kaman. If he is not traded at the trade deadline, it is expected that he will be bought out by the Hornets and allowed to sign with a contender.

Mar 12, 2012; New Orleans, LA, USA; New Orleans Hornets center Chris Kaman (35) shoots while defended by Charlotte Bobcats forward D.J. White (8) and center Byron Mullens (22) in the second half of their game at the New Orleans Arena. The Bobcats won, 73-71. Mandatory Credit: Chuck Cook-US PRESSWIRE

As Ira Winderman tweeted, it would likely come down to Kaman picking between the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics. With the Celtics, Kaman would likely be used in a reserve role. The Celtics are also currently going to need more then just Kaman to become contenders again for a championship.

The Heat currently have Joel Anthony, Dexter Pittman, and Eddy Curry as their centers. That is probably as weak as a center rotation as there is in the NBA. The Heat have shown their desperation for a center several times over the past two weeks.

Mar 14, 2012; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bulls shooting guard Ronnie Brewer (11) shoots around Miami Heat center Joel Anthony (50) in the second half at the United Center.
The first instance was against the Lakers when they could not stop Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol inside. Against the Magic on Tuesday, Dwight Howard owned Joel Anthony and every big man the Heat threw at him, exposing the Heat’s weakness at the center position. The latest instance was when the Heat played the Chicago Bulls last night and likely lost the game by being out hustled and out worked on the boards.

The Heat are still a very sharp championship contender, but they have a major flaw right now. If Kaman is not traded by the NBA’s trade deadline today at 3PM ET, Heat fans should have some hope that our center issues may finally be solved soon!

The Heat are stacked when it comes to the 1-4 (PG-PF), but the real problem has been the 5, aka the center spot. So far, Joel Anthony has taken the job and been the Heat’s starting center for the first half of the season. He fights for rebounds and gets blocks, but unfortunately he doesn’t have the size to bang down low with the league’s best big men. This article is an in-depth look at the Heat’s depth at the center position and what they can do to improve.

Joel Anthony: No Miami Heat fan can hate on what Joel Anthony has done. He has given Miami energy that they would not have if it weren’t for him, but he doesn’t do enough to belong in the starting lineup. His lack of size and scoring really diminish his value and it may be time to look for a new center.

Dexter Pittman: Young, big, and aggressive. He has shown that he can score and play defense, but is he really the guy to take the Heat’s starting 5 spot? Spo is hesistant, but has been giving him more minutes. Pittman has produced, but whether the Heat are committed to him or trading him is the question.

Eddy Curry: I was all for the Heat signing Curry, but in the minutes he has gotten, he just hasn’t produced. The chances of him regaining his first-round pick form are slim, but if the Heat are willing to give him a chance, Spo should start to give him more minutes.

Mickell Gladness: The Heat kept him on the roster for the beginning of the season, but cut him twice this season. They decided on Friday to cut him for good and he is no longer with the team. It’s a shame because he never really got a chance, but you have to trust Pat Riley and what he is doing.

So, what are the options?

Well, realistically, the Heat’s best option is to try and trade for Chris Kaman or Chris “Birdman” Andersen. The problem would be giving up solid bench players such as Mike Miller or Udonis Haslem to get them. New Orleans would expect good players for Kaman, but Denver just wants expiring contracts, which would make Birdman a possibility.

Another option is to sign Rasheed Wallace. Rumor has it that he tried out for the Heat last week, and while he may not be a center, he would give Miami an aggressive force in the paint. His tenacity and aggressiveness would definitely benefit Miami. Whatever happens, it is definitely a fact that Miami needs help at the center position.
