There are certain players in the NBA that are turnovers waiting to happen (Jordan Crawford, anybody?).

Here’s your list of players currently in the playoffs that averaged the most turnovers per 100 possessions (same thing as touches) during the regular season:

Only counted players that played at least 24 minutes per game.

Basically, when Reggie Evans touches the ball he turns the ball over an astounding quarter of the time.

Obviously, the vast majority of these players are post players — and that’s the tradeoff of getting a post shot: you get an easier shot (compared to a 18-foot jumper) but the probability of getting the ball poked away is greater.

Houston is the only playoff team with two players that averaged more than 13 turnovers per 100 possessions apiece (though Jeremy Lin is currently injured). This turnover rate is also tempo-adjusted (i.e. per 100 possessions) so even after accounting for Houston’s fast tempo they have two turnover-prone players.

Click for data link

I also looked at guards that are currently in the playoffs and who had high turnover rates during the regular season:

Again, only looked at regular season guards that played in at least 30 regular season games and play at least 24 minutes a game.

Note that both of the Rockets’ starting guards (Lin and Harden) had high turnover rates — think how good the Rockets could be if they kept their turnovers down, even a little bit?

Surprising that Andre Miller and Mario Chalmers had two of the three highest turnover rates of any playoff guard. Understandably, Professor Miller runs a high-octane offense (though again, turnover rate is tempo-adjusted) that focuses on pounding the ball into the paint. And as we saw in the previous graph, the players with the highest turnover rates tend to be post players, so trying to feed the post can be a risky strategy, which might be why Andre Miller has a relatively high turnover rate.

Click for data link

Last nights game with the Rockets coming into Miami was nothing but exciting. The Heat knew it was going to be hard with Bosh being out with a cold, and having to go against the young talented back court of Lin and Harden. The Heat were able to pull out the Victory 114 to 108.

With Bosh out someone had to pick up the slack. Haslem was the guy to do it, he played great at the center position for the heat. He scored 9 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in 28 minutes. Wade and James both had outstanding games aswell. Both scored over 30 points, shooting 50% or over. Battier even added on 4 threes on a night where both defenses seemed to be missing.

Feb 6 2013; Miami, FL, USA; Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden (13) and Miami Heat small forward LeBron James (6) during the second half at American Airlines Arena.

For the Rockets Harden was trying to do all he could to keep the Rockets in the game. He went 10/16 scoring 36 points, to go along with 12 rebounds and 7 assists. In the fourth quarter Harden was hot, making everything. The turning point was when Harden was driving for an easy layup and Chalmers slide in front of him and took a charge. Lin had a below average game only going 3/10 from the field with 1 rebound and 3 assists.

These are the games Miami needs to win. They have two more hard games coming up at home and they need all the momentum they can get. They have the clippers on Friday and then the Lakers on Sunday. Bosh is day to day right now and can hopefully be back for the game Friday night.
