The Miami Heat are trying to find pieces that can fit their roster and make it more attractive to LeBron James and the rest of the Big 3, but that’s a task a lot easier said than done. Still, Pat Riley has been aggressive in the first hours of free agency as the list of possible Heat targets is growing by the hour.
After making contact with big names like Luol Deng and Kyle Lowry, the Miami Heat are looking at other names on the open market to fill out holes in their roster and that has brought about some interesting free agent links in South Beach.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Riley is expected to pursue Washington Wizards center Marcin Gortat, swingman Trevor Ariza and Utah Jazz forward Marvin Williams.
Now, it is on Riley to replenish a roster that failed in a five-game NBA Finals loss to San Antonio. As Yahoo Sports reported on Saturday, James is pursuing a full max contract extension, beginning at $20.6 million – or something slightly below. Bosh and Wade will need to take pay cuts – Wade’s significant – to create the cap space for Miami to be competitive in pursuit of free agent targets that include Kyle Lowry, Luol Deng, Marcin Gortat, Trevor Ariza and Marvin Williams.
This isn’t at all surprising as Riley is clearly casting a huge net to not only make sure he finds the right guy but to also flex his front office muscles at LeBron James. That’s who Riley is speaking to in every single move he makes and so far he hasn’t been doing a bad job of convincing him to stay.
