Entering an offseason with a slew of mulling decisions, the Miami Heat are coming prepared with their pens and checkbooks on hand. Just days after a first-round postseason elimination by the Milwaukee Bucks, several reports have surfaced throughout the media regarding both the Heat and the potential future of All-Star Forward, Jimmy Butler.

The Heat’s primary scorer (21.5 points per game) and NBA regular season leader in steals (2.1) is expected to seek a four-year, $181 million maximum extension this summer. While the final year of Butler’s contract is guaranteed for next season, he’ll still be eligible to sign a Heat extension within the coming months.

If, in fact, that both parties reach an agreement, Butler would earn over $40 million a year for the 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2025-26 seasons — and at 36 years of age, he’ll make just over $50.3 million in 2025-26. If Butler and the Heat do choose to hold-off on extension talks this summer, Butler will look forward to a $37,653,000 Player Option following the 2022-23 season.

In 2019, Miami signed Butler to a four-year deal worth $141 million after acquiring the star forward from the Philadelphia 76ers in a four team trade that offseason. Miami has already invested into Bam Adebayo, signing him to a five-year and $163 million extension last November.

Even then, Miami has a number of key free agents heading into the summer. They’ll have to address the impending statuses of Duncan Robinson, Kendrick Nunn (both RFA), Goran Dragic, and Victor Oladipo, but if there’s any desire to remain relevant and keep their championship window open, paying their absolute best player will keep those possibilities in play.

Jimmy Butler has earned a Miami Heat extension and it’s really that simple.

Creatively, the Heat front-office will be able to work around such a deal for Butler, as they could apply a descending  adjustment to his contract. This is where the yearly salary of Butler’s extension would gradually lower itself for each season, in order to avoid any potential risks.

It’ll be critical for Miami to stay away from possibly backloading a deal, especially for a player who’s suffered a number of injuries over the last few seasons. Butler will be 32 years of age in September, which will draw much concern for whether or not he’ll be able to live-up to the extremities of that extension.

Do the Heat still view him as a continual cornerstone player that they can continue to win with, in addition to convincingly lure other stars to join him in South Beach? The simple answer is absolutely.

While leading the Heat in scoring, Butler finished the year with career-highs of 7.1 assists and 6.9 rebounds, on 49 percent shooting from the field. Butler also led the Miami Heat in the categories of Player Efficiency Rating (26.5), Box Plus-Minus (7.5), and in Usage (26.6). For what’s been a match made in heaven between the two parties, you can consider Butler’s early tenure with the Heat as an overachievement.

The Miami Heat know what Jimmy can be at his peak and they know what they would be without him.

And while it will be much-documented going forward, you can expect critics to believe that Jimmy’s daunting first-round postseason performance against the Milwaukee Bucks (14.5 points on 28.7 percent shooting) en route to Miami’s exit, could apprehensively change the outlook of this deal. However, this example of recency bias doesn’t come close to outweighing the accomplishments Butler has already fulfilled in his relatively short time with the Heat.

A much-headlined performance in leading Miami to a spectacular 2020 postseason run that included a trip to the NBA Finals, and then to follow that up with an arguable top-ten candidacy for the 2021 Most Valuable Player award, it’s without question that an extension for Butler will be rightfully earned.

Molded with an uncanny desire to win and a consistent ability to perform in clutch-moments, Butler is at the absolute peak of his career. To allow a player who’s drastically re-enforced the direction of their culture — simply walk away — would leave their organization at a possible disposition.

One particular reason for this would be the failure to retain a borderline NBA superstar who’s practically showed respect for the front office, coaching staff, and the team in its entirety. Another, would be placing Miami’s younger assets under greater pressure to develop with the crucial loss of an exemplified leader.

While it’s all speculative and simply business, it’s truly difficult to envision Butler not being able to finish his career with the Heat, let alone receive an extension from them. Just a season after lifting the organization to the league’s brightest stage, the Heat have heavily embraced Butler and they’ll have to prove their trust to him in a way of currency.
