The Miami Heat have an illustrious history, though they are one of the youngest teams in the entire NBA. When you look at teams by birth year, they are the sixth youngest team behind New Orleans (2002), Toronto (1995), Memphis (1995), Orlando (1989), and Minnesota (1989).

However, when you go to rank the titles won by each franchise, the Miami Heat sit in a three-way tie for sixth place at three titles to their name. That just speaks to the rich nature of their history, though it isn’t much of it by some standards.

In that same light, when people think of the Greatest Miami Heat Players Of All Time, there are a few names that automatically come up. Dwyane Wade is at the very top of that heap, the greatest player in franchise history, while guys like the great Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Chris Bosh, Jimmy Butler, and a few others can come up.

Here’s the thing though, the names that do come up are just as interesting as those that don’t. That would, specifically, be guys like Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James.

Miami Heat: Considering LeBron James Among Team GOATs

Though they have similar circumstances, teaming up with Dwyane Wade to bring the Heat a title, the situations are a bit different. The whole synopsis here is this.

When talking LeBron James, he should be considered among the pantheon of Miami Heat All-Timers, though it’s fair if you don’t include Shaq. Shaq made his name elsewhere, playing 12 seasons and winning titles before joining the Heat.

Now, he fully embraced Miami, as they did him along the way to helping them to their first title.

So, while he will always be a legend in Miami for that and while you could include him among the names for the greatest Heat players ever, this is the main reason why it’s fair if you don’t.

When it comes to LeBron James though, it was in Miami where he truly became LeBron James. Unlike Shaq, who was a surefire Hall Of Famer and title winner before coming to LA, James wasn’t.

Yes, he was, likely, a surefire Hall Of Famer, still and at that point, however, he didn’t know what it took to win a title. Heck, he didn’t know how to win at the highest level.

Miami Heat: Though Shaq Is A Finicky Case, LeBron James Must Be Considered

In the process of helping his team win two titles in back-to-back seasons, the Big 3 Era not only shaped what basketball would look like following the occurrence (big name combinations, small ball, and playing your biggest and most put together wings as stretch bigs) but showed you what an NBA cultural phenomenon could look like in the Social Media Era.

Let’s be frank, Allen Iverson and Michael Jordan are and were cultural phenomenons, among a few others across the history of the league, but no one did it amongst the advent of social media prior. Things like ESPN’S daily Heat Index and others were figments of the imagination until the Miami Heat’s Big 3 Era.

So, all in all, you consider LeBron James one of the Miami Heat’s All-Timers for a few reasons. Not only did he actually become him in Miami, but he helped them win the majority of their titles in the process.

And outside of the facts that he actually found himself and helped them win that hardware, it was partially through him (and some tough Chris Bosh play in the middle) that the Miami Heat were able to literally change the course of the game forever.

That’s what makes LeBron a must-consider when discussing the greatest players in Miami Heat franchise history.
