The Miami Heat recently played the Los Angeles Lakers, winning the game 112-98. It was a well-rounded victory for the Heat.

That game also had a little more meaning to it because of who was playing on the other side. The Heat always want to bring their best effort against former Miami Heat champion, LeBron James.

They also have the added motivation that the Lakers defeated them in the 2020 NBA championship. Since that Finals loss, the Heat have turned the tables on the Lakers.

Miami has won four of its last five games against the Los Angeles Lakers.

While the Heat have remained a competitive playoff team, the Lakers have struggled and failed to make the playoffs last season.

The Miami Heat are hovering around the .500 mark right now, but the Lakers are several games out of playoff position. Their struggles have generated interest across the league about a possible LeBron James trade scenario, especially with his recent comments describing his frustration with the team.

Given the current state of the Lakers, would it be possible that LeBron James actually requests a trade?

And if that happens, could he be reunited with the Miami Heat? Let’s break down the likelihood of a trade, possible trade scenarios, and reasons for trading for the four-time MVP.

Could LA’s Recent Struggles Lead To Miami Heat And LeBron James Reunion?

Let’s make one thing clear. No matter what direction they want to go with the organization, the Lakers are not trading LeBron James unless he demands a trade.

Likelihood

We rarely see a superstar of LeBron’s level request a trade, and it is always difficult to put together a feasible trade package to acquire such a player. The most recent star of this level to demand a trade was Kevin Durant, who ultimately returned to the Brooklyn Nets.

Still, the one thing we know about LeBron James is that he is a winner and wants to continue to have that identity associated with him. Currently, the Lakers are not winning.

They are several games below .500 and their chances of making the playoffs are becoming increasingly unlikely. LeBron suggested his frustration with the current position of his team in his post-game interview after the, 98-112, loss to the Miami Heat, saying,

"“I’m a winner, and I want to win. And I want to win and give myself a chance to win and still compete for championships. That has always been my passion. That has always been my goal since I entered the league as an 18-year-old kid out of Akron, Ohio.”"

With Anthony Davis constantly sidelined and the Lakers’ lack of consistent shooting, it is unlikely the Lakers are going to win any time soon. The Lakers promised to be caretakers of LeBron’s legacy, but they have not traded their first-round picks to improve the roster this season.

They might be holding out and instead looking toward the future after LeBron James is gone. If LeBron James starts to believe this, his frustration with the team will grow even more.

As of now, it seems very unlikely that LeBron James would request a trade from the Lakers. He loves the city of Los Angeles and the Lakers are one of the most celebrated franchises in the league.

However, if tensions between James and the front office grow, it may lead to one of the biggest trade requests in NBA history. Although the Lakers would have control over where LeBron James ends up in any trade scenario, you have to think that they would, at least, work with James to find a destination that suits his wishes for the end of his career.

Why? Because he’s LeBron James.

He’s one of the greatest NBA players of all time. And he delivered an NBA championship to the Lakers.

If trade negotiations start, the Miami Heat would be one of the most likely teams to acquire James. There are a number of reasons why this is the case.

Though The Miami Heat Would Have Work To Do, They Could Find A Way To Do It

The Miami Heat missed out on the Kevin Durant sweepstakes this offseason, mainly because the desired package for the superstar was so large that no team was willing to give up the assets to acquire him.

Putting Together Trade Package

It likely would have cost the Heat Bam Adebayo and all of their draft picks to trade for Durant, and the Heat were reluctant to depart with their All-Star big man. Rightfully so, as Adebayo has since exploded offensively this season.

The Heat also missed out on acquiring Donovan Mitchell this summer. In this case, the Heat did not have as many draft picks or as much compensation to offer as other competing teams.

Even though LeBron James is still a top-ten player in the NBA, in theory, trading for him should not be as difficult as it was to trade for Durant or Mitchell. Durant was in the middle of a contract and Mitchell is a young superstar with the same contract situation.

James, on the other hand, is a 38-year-old, with a player option at the end of next season. Although he is still playing at an elite level, it seems unreasonable that a player of this age would require the same assets to be traded as a younger superstar.

The Lakers have a little less leverage in this case. So, what would a Miami Heat trade offer look like?

The trade starts with offering all their first-round picks and either Kyle Lowry or Duncan Robinson. The Lakers will then probably ask for Tyler Herro.

That is where negotiations might get difficult, as Miami will probably not want to give up their young budding star. Additionally, trading Herro would be difficult due to his recent contract extension.

The Miami Heat Would Have To Consider It But It’s Really All Up To LeBron

Even though LeBron is 38 years old, the Miami Heat would have to give up a lot to reacquire him via trade. Giving up valuable draft picks might risk their future following the retirement of LeBron James and Jimmy Butler.

Benefits For The Heat

Still, the Miami Heat are not a team to rebuild through the draft. They reload.

And LeBron James might just be the best possible way they could reload. In his 20th season in the NBA, James is averaging over 28 points per game.

This scoring production might be exactly what the Heat currently need to put them over the edge. Miami is a great team defensively, but they are currently last in the league in points per game.

LeBron’s scoring wouldn’t be the only thing he could provide. He is a proven leader and one of the best passers in league history.

The Heat have plenty of shooters they could surround him with. Players like Max Strus and Duncan Robinson would have opportunities generated for them that were not there before.

James would truly maximize the offensive potential of this Heat team.

One of Miami’s biggest issues this season has been holding on to big leads late in games.

James is one of the best players at controlling the pace of the game and would be able to conduct the offense in a way where this is less of an issue. Plus, pairing him with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo would create one of the most formidable trios in the NBA.

LeBron James could save what has, otherwise, been a mediocre season for the Heat plagued with injuries. He could also give them a great chance to win next season.

This trade scenario draws a lot of parallels to the Shaquille O’Neal trade. He was an aging superstar frustrated with the Lakers organization.

Shaq was traded to the Miami Heat. Within a few years, he won an NBA championship.

If the Heat can find a way to trade for LeBron, it is likely they will win another championship from a talent perspective. This may just be wishful thinking and it is far more likely that LeBron finishes out his contract in Los Angeles.

But if, by any chance, James requests a trade, Miami would certainly welcome back The King with open arms. Well, at least, they should.
