With the Miami Heat roster getting back to some form of regularity, the need for an extended roster has started to die down a bit.
While the opportunity to or the need to bring players back up may arise again, with the unfortunate situation of the NBA’s health and safety protocols constantly looming around any in each corner of the season, it’ll pay off to keep those guys close to the vest if you can.
Well, for the Miami Heat, keeping guys close to the vest was something they took quite literally.
In fact and to be specific, they chose to keep one Guy, in particular, right in Miami as he has been for the last few weeks.

Making room for Kyle Guy‘s newly minted two-way contract by waving Marcus Garrett, the Miami Heat said a few things with this move. The first one is that they have ambitions of competing this year and plan to make every logical move to make it happen.

The second thing is a bit more drawn out. While Marcus Garrett has the opportunity to be a special defensive player for the Miami Heat down the road, Kyle Guy’s offense is something that they can possibly take advantage of right now in a big spot.
There is a place for Garrett in the future, as you hope that the Miami Heat can keep him in their system while he recovers from the injury that got him waived in the first place. That also plays into the first notion.
They waived a guy that they wouldn’t be able to get anything out of while he rehabilitates, in order to bring in a guy that can contribute now. They are thinking about winning something this year.
Even outside of the injury though, this Miami Heat team has a ton of capable defenders along the perimeter. Guys like Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Caleb Martin, P.J. Tucker, Gabe Vincent, and KZ Okpala are all capable of mirroring what Garrett does for you right now.
The need for what Guy can do being a bit greater— or a greater luxury to have, while you also have guys that can mirror Garrett’s skillset is really all it is.

It’s really as simple as that. While the injury had a part to play, the aforementioned reason is probably the biggest part of it all right now.
While you can count on all of those guys to do what Garrett can do for you right now, there may come a point and time throughout the remainder of the season where you need a shot-maker.
Kyle Guy is just that. On top of being able to just make shots though, Guy has proven to be able to make tough shots that he shouldn’t be able to hit.
That very ability may come in handy when the Miami Heat most need it. In conclusion, the fact that they really like something about Guy is apparent at this point.
It also emphasizes one more thing about the NBA, in general. Scoring, shooting, and shot-making are held at a premium and if you can do that with regularity, then you can certainly find yourself a job in the big leagues.
