POWER FORWARD – Spencer Hawes

Media people (and even watered-down versions like bloggers) have to be apolitical. It’s the nature of trying to cover disparate views by a varied community of athletes. So, Hawes’ inclusion in this list has nothing to do with my own politics but rather those of the Miami Heat.

Alonzo Mourning is a huge supporter of President Obama, hosting several fund raisers at his home in South Florida. Wade, James, Bosh and Allen are all supporters as well, and appeared in this public service announcement with the First Lady.

So, having said that, imagine signing Hawes, a well-known über-conservative who has criticized every action by President Obama since coming into office in 2008? Not going to go well, I’d imagine.

Of course, this is probably the kicker, available in Hawes’ bathroom in his Philadelphia home, courtesy of former 76ers teammate, Evan Turner (via Instragram):

On a team that prides itself on chemistry and friendship, on and off the court, Hawes would be a stain you just can’t wipe away.
