Overall Grade: B+

I’m grading the Heat free agency on a curve. The Heat essentially lost out on free agents while they waited for Dwyane Wade to make his decision. After Wade’s decision, primarily third tier free agents remained. Therefore, given what was available, the Heat did a great job rebuilding their roster.

What Does the Season Look Like: The Year of the Dragon

It’s clear to me the Heat have signed players designed to play to Goran Dragic’s strengths. Every new player signed is either a legitimate threat from three, or an athletic player who thrives in an uptempo offense. Luke Babbit, Wayne Ellington, and Rodney McGruder are three point shooters. Derrick Williams, James Johnson, and Willie Reed are athletic forwards who thrive in uptempo offense. Tyler Johnson is both an athletic finisher and a threat from three.

It’s easy to envision a Heat offense based on a Dragic/Whiteside pick and roll, with spacing provided by perimeter threats such as Tyler Johnson, Josh Richardson, Wayne Ellington, and Luke Babbit. Dragic’s attacking style is complemented by slashing players such as Derrick Williams and Justise Winslow who can take advantage of rotations and double teams.

Overall Season Estimate: Lottery bound

Despite a positive grade for free agency, I feel the Heat are lottery bound this season. First, despite record money to spend on free agency, the new players signed by the Heat were available for a reason. They are all either one dimensional players or players looking to rehabilitate their careers. While any could be a nice addition around the edges, none have shown ability to be the main stay of a team.

Second, I do not think Chris Bosh will play another game of basketball in the NBA. With Bosh the Heat could conceivably make the playoffs. Without Bosh, this season becomes an opportunity for the young core to grow and develop. I also expect Goran Dragic to have his best season in years.

Finally, I believe Riley constructed this team to compete for free agents next year, not to win this year. By signing new players to essentially one year contracts, Riley ensures he will have cap space available next summer.  By tailoring the team to Goran Dragic, he increases his trade value. By letting the young core grow and showcasing their talents, the Heat will have appeal for marquee free agents next year.
