The deal: Two years, $2.2 million dollars. The second year is a player option.

Analysis: Willie Reed impressed Heat fans and coaches a year ago when he played on the Heat’s summer league team. He played well in limited minutes for the Nets, but conflict with the coach prevented Reed from playing more. As a result, there is only a small sample size of NBA play to judge Reed by. However, although Reed played limited minutes for the Nets, his per 36 numbers are impressive at 15.4 points, 10.3 rebounds,  and 2.5 blocks. The Heat are hoping he can continue to produce at that rate if given more minutes. Reed is an athletic defender and wants to play in an uptempo scheme which should suit the Heat’s new style. He gives the Heat a second rim protector, enabling the Heat to play a similar style basketball with both the 1st and 2nd units.

Financially, Reed is on a minimum ‘prove it’ contract. He hopes his play this year will warrant a bigger payday next year.

On-court Impact: Allows the Heat to keep a rim protector on court at all times.
