What Ellington doesn’t do well

Despite being foremost a shooter, Ellington does struggle from certain areas of the floor. Last season per NBA.com, Ellington hit just 35.4 percent of shots classified as being from mid-range. Making up 34 percent of his total shot attempts, this doesn’t represent an efficient output for a shooter. With the Heat heavily invested in analytics, and with a spread offence coming up this season, Ellington’s volume of shooting from the mid-range should certainly decrease noticeably.

Consistency, or lack thereof, is certainly something that has plagued Ellington through his career. In his defence, consistent playing time has not been a common theme throughout his various stops. Having said that, the Heat will certainly be hoping that he can eradicate or decrease the amount of poor shooting nights. This preseason with the Heat is a prime example. In his debut start for the Heat, Ellington shot 4-of-8 from downtown and finished with 14 points. Coming off the bench the next game against San Antonio, he shot an abysmal 1-of-9 from three for five points. He then followed this up with 4-of-9 from three for 14 against Minnesota.

These up-and-down performances certainly need to be rectified.
