Heat NBA Draft 2017: 5 players Miami should consider reaching for
By Wes Goldberg
5. Cameron Oliver, Nevada
Position: Power forward
Age: 21
Height/weight: 6’8’, 225
Wingspan: 7’1’’
Season averages: 16.0 PPG, 8.7 REB, 1.8 AST, 2.6 BLK
Shooting splits: 46.5-38.4-69.2
Assessment:
Cameron Oliver has all the skill, but doesn’t do a great job applying it. He’s explosive, long, strong and fluid. With the ball in his hands, he’s a threat to hit a jumper or rip down the rim. He’s a pick-and-roll threat on the lob, which could be his bread-and-butter early. If he can learn to pass out of the roll, though, he’ll become extremely dangerous.
However, as The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor writes, he struggles with his basic fundamentals:
"“Poor basketball IQ; commits careless turnovers, fails to execute simple plays, dribbles into traffic, takes too many shots early in the clock.”"
Next: 5 players with the highest ceilings in the NBA Draft
Fit with Heat:
Oliver is the biggest swing of this group. Maybe he’s Draymond Green, or maybe he’s Anthony Bennett. More likely, he’s somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. Depending on where, he could be a steal in this draft. Miami’s coaching staff has done wonders, but do they have the patience for someone like Oliver?
