Miami Heat: An early look at the Heat depth chart going into next season

Goran Dragic

Against all odds, the Heat managed to keep Goran Dragic after the trade for Jimmy Butler. He was originally included in the three-team package sending him to the Dallas Mavericks, but somehow the Mavericks thought they were getting Kelly Olynyk and Derrick Jones Jr. instead.

How? Your guess is as good as ours, but regardless the Mavericks ended up getting nothing and Dragic stayed put in Miami.

Dragic had a rough season last year, battling injuries and a shifting role as he went from starting point guard to the bench and back again in his limited time, but if he’s on the roster at the start of next season he should be the favorite to once again start at point guard.

Justise Winslow

Among all the positionless players on this roster, Justise Winslow may be the quintessential example. Winslow can play basically any position from point guard to small-ball power forward, but he’s likely to be Dragic’s competitor for starting point guard as he started at that spot for the greater part of the second half of last season.

As the team is currently configured, Winslow could very easily be both the first guard or wing off the bench, but he probably won’t be a starter to begin next season.

Tyler Herro

As a rookie, Tyler Herro has the chance to make an immediate impact for the Heat next season. He could become one of the best shooters on the roster right off the bat, and he’s a decent ball handler. Herro can almost certainly play big minutes at either point guard or shooting guard next season.

Dion Waiters

Another positionless prototype, Dion Waiters could play both point guard or on the wing, but he’s most likely to return to his role as starting shooting guard next season.
