With rumors surfacing that the Cleveland Cavaliers will be interested in Derrick Jones Jr, could they pull it off with their limited cap space?
With teams not selected for NBA Orlando already looking forward to the offseason, it’s no surprise that the Cleveland Cavaliers are being rumored as interested in Derrick Jones Jr.
Former NBA executive John Hollinger said in an interview with the Athletic that he fully expects the club to take an interest in the 23-year old forward. With depth at both the guard and big man position, it makes sense that the Cavaliers would target a wing.
And with an already promising young core in the making, Jones could be the final piece to what they hope is the the last installment of their rebuild personnel. Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Kevin Porter Jr, and Derrick Jones Jr is a solid group to continue grooming going forward.
That being said, the Cavaliers have one issue come free agency: money. Which is exactly what prompted Hollinger’s prediction on their interest in Jones. Cleveland will be working with just their mid-level exception which may not be enough to bring the forward to Northeast Ohio.
If they can find a way to sell Jones on a bigger role with the Cavaliers, then they should be considered as dangerous a threat as any to tempt him out of South Beach.
