Ranking the Miami Heat young core by developmental ceiling: 4. KZ Okpala (22 y/o)
While some are divided on how much of an impact KZ Okpala can make this year, there’s no denying his potential. Defensively, Okpala plays beyond his years.
The way he is able to move his feet and stay in front of defenders is truly special. He’s only been in the league for a couple of years, yet he is able to go toe-to-toe with some of the NBA’s best offensive players.
His main issues are on the offensive side of the floor. So far in his NBA career, Summer League included, he has been unable to play a consistent role on offense.
Okpala’s potential is super high simply because of how elite he already is on the defensive end. That being said, he has a very long way to go in terms of his offensive game.
Ranking the Miami Heat young core by developmental ceiling: 3. Omer Yurtseven (23 y/o)
After a dominant display in Summer League, Omer Yurtseven earned a two-year contract with the Miami Heat. His potential completely depends on what role they choose to put him in.
Offensively, Yurtseven won’t be able to dominate the post as much as he did in Summer League. However, he can still use his post skills, as well as his shooting abilities, to be an offensive force at the NBA level.
His defense isn’t elite by any means, but if he can become an average defender, there’s no reason he can’t be a decent NBA starter. Improving his defense will be the key to unlocking his full potential.
In terms of his role, Yurtseven will thrive if he gets the opportunity to play at the NBA level. If the Miami Heat give him that chance to play big-time minutes, he could end up being a real gem.
