Major storylines to watch this Miami Heat season: The backup center battle

Bam Adebayo is the starting center for the Miami Heat. There is no question about it. However, there are some questions surrounding who the backup center will be.

Last season, the Miami Heat signed Dewayne Dedmon towards the end of the year. He played his role so well that the team decided to bring him back on a one-year deal this offseason.

However, they also found another gem this summer. Omer Yurtseven, who the team signed last year, played super well during Summer League.

In fact, his play earned him a two-year deal with the Miami Heat this offseason. This leads to the question – who will be the go-to backup center this year?

In all likelihood, Dedmon will begin the year getting the majority of the backup center minutes. Depending on how well Yurtseven plays, though, that is subject to change.

Yurtseven is only 23 years old, so there’s a chance the Miami Heat see him as a long-term building block. If that is the case, they may want to give him a lot of minutes this season.

If Dedmon loses his starting job, he could even be used as a trade chip. This is something to watch very carefully throughout the season, as it could have some rotational implications.
