Miami Heat: Marcus Garrett’s Making Strides, But Needs Further Development

Though he is very adept on one side of the ball right now though, the other side needs quite a bit of work.

WHILE GARRETT HOLDS DEFENSIVE CAPABILITIES, HIS HANDLE AND SKILLSET EXUDE OFFENSIVE GROWTH.

While Garrett possesses an elite level of defensive footwork, that quickness does translate to an offensive setting in some capacity. Although not an efficient outside shooter yet, it shouldn’t keep him from exploiting potential mismatches and using his length to finish through defenders.

Although he converted on just 24 of 45 field goals from within five feet at Sioux Falls, which was about 8 percent less than the G-League average (61.4 percent), it was difficult for Garrett to find offensive consistency on a SkyForce roster that generated the fourth-lowest field goal percentage.

There are two things there. He should have had a ton of opportunity to max out, but he didn’t, not quite helping that team percentage.

The efficiency is substandard, but with higher repetition and perhaps, an exploration into more creativity, he now has the luxury of having experienced veterans in his corner to help breed confidence into his game.

It’s a fairly simple concept, but you can always learn from those around you who are more experienced. Garrett’s on the right track and it’s clear that he understands it, such as in the following play where he shows a good bit of decisiveness in his offense.

The Heat continue to create opportunities for younger prospects and now with the NBA incentivizing a plan which permits an unlimited amount of games played for all current players on Two-Way deals, Garrett will more than likely serve significant time as a rotational piece.

That’s, especially, as the Heat continue to regain their health and depth. At this point, the Heat will need every player available to step up, which is essential in Garrett’s case, a player that needs more significant run in the big league.

All it takes is one opportunity and that opportunity has seemed to arrive at such a critical time of the season. Hopefully, Garret continues to be ready for his moments.
