Miami Heat: Pursuing DeMarcus Cousins Might Mean Losing Kyle Guy

With the recent performance of Kyle Guy, it would be a shock if the Miami Heat decide not to sign him to another 10-day contract.

After playing four games with the Heat, including Wednesday night’s win against the Portland Trail Blazers, he is averaging a total of 11.8 points, two rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, while shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc.

The Miami Heat would have a hard decision to make on whether or not to sign Guy to a second 10-day contract, possibly a regular minimum guaranteed contract, or to sign a big man like Boogie Cousins.

Signing a guard like Kyle Guy would be beneficial for the Miami Heat. It would mean that they will have another guard that they will be able to continue to develop for the future, while he could certainly also contribute to the Miami Heat’s pursuit of a championship now.

On the other hand, signing a veteran center like DeMarcus Cousins would be a great way of addressing their current situation of big man depth and does more for your “win now” hopes or mentality.

What’s most important right now is trying to get a championship within Jimmy Butler‘s window. Signing a 31-year old Cousins, who has only a few years left as a pro in the NBA, would mean taking a risk on losing a young guard with high potential.

It’s sad, but it’s really that simple. Kyle Guy will be scooped up if the Heat let him get away, you can be certain of it.

Having said all of that though, if they do decide to sign Guy or Cousins, it would mean that they are probably willing to risk going above the luxury tax. Signing another player in their pursuit of going to the NBA Finals, possibly winning their fourth NBA title in franchise history, seems worth it.

Pat Riley will certainly think so.
