Gerald Green’s 28 points off the bench helped spark an early Miami Heat rally and beat the Washington Wizards in the team’s second-to-last preseason game.
Down 16 early in the first half, the Miami Heat starters looked sluggish to tip off the game. However, a spark from Gerald Green and the rest of the bench helped light a fire that energized this Heat team to a 110-105 win over the Washington Wizards at AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami.
Green was hot, scoring 28 points in 25 minutes, including going three-of-five from the 3-point line. But more on that in a bit.
Washington, sans Bradley Beal, got the advantage over Miami’s starting lineup thanks to John Wall’s individual brilliance and ability to get his teammates the ball in scoring position. All five of Washington’s starters scored double-digit points, including Kris Humphries, scoring 16 points in place of Nene Hilario.
Marcin Gortat, who scored a team-high 18 points, also had four blocked shots as he protected the rim from nearly everything in a Heat uniform.
And so it was Miami’s bench that shined tonight. The win is irrelevant–Washington benched its starters late in a close game as the Heat continued to play Dwyane Wade and Goran Dragic–but it’s a reassuring to see the bench guys rise to the challenge and save this team from getting blown out.
