Dion Waiters continued his hot streak as the Miami Heat came back from down 18 to beat the Brooklyn Nets 109-106.
Welcome to the Hot Hand, where after every Miami Heat game win or loss we recognize the player who best put his stamp on the game.
Another day, another big fourth-quarter performance from Dwy-er-Dion Waiters.
Finishing with 24 points, five rebounds, and eight assists, Waiters continued his recent hot streak this time on the road against the woeful Brooklyn Nets.
While not as impressive as his memorable performance against Golden State, Waiters once again proved clutch late, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter and knocking down a huge three pointer with 6.8 seconds left in regulation, giving Miami a 107-103 lead and sealing an eventual 109-106 win.
Rallying the Heat from an 18-point deficit in the final period, Waiters was the driving force behind a team that has faced nothing but constant ridicule as of late, including direct criticism aimed at Waiters himself.
Over the past three games, Waiters is averaging an even 30 points on 60 percent shooting from the floor, 68 percent from beyond the arc. Putting points on the board has never been an issue for the five-year veteran, and that’s a fact that certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Per the South Florida Sun-Sentinel:
"“At the end of the clock, I love having a player that has the ability to put the ball on the floor and create something,” coach Erik Spoelstra said. “And he’s dynamic in that regard.”"
While his scoring has been a given as of late, the most impressive asset of Waiters’s game tonight was his ability to get teammates involved while keeping himself under control, finishing with just two turnovers.
Dion Waiters has just become a valuable asset for the Miami Heat
Is Dion Waiters the Miami Heat's big fish or simply bait? After the guard's breakout performances, he could be due for a big pay day, or be part of a trade.
In the midst of a season that has already lost its way, it’s certainly a sight-for-sore-eyes to see something new and exciting coming out of South Beach. The perks of being in a conference dominated by LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, this may be the largest amount of exposure Spoelstra and company receive all year.
For the Heat, Wayne Ellington scored 22 and Goran Dragic added 17 as they’ve now won five in a row, their longest win streak since March of last season.
Needless to say, with the All Star break approaching and Waiters’s confidence and swagger at an all-time high, Miami shows no sign of slowing down any time soon, and if so, No. 11 may find himself with a handsome pay day this summer.
The Heat (16-30) will travel to Chicago for Friday night showdown with Dwyane Wade and the Bulls at 8:00 PM ET.
