After both teams were passed on by Gordon Hayward, the Miami Heat and Utah Jazz may end up bidding for the fan-favorite free agent.

With Gordon Hayward shipping out to Boston, the Utah Jazz shift to making up for their loss with uncommitted free agents. One of those being Miami Heat free agent James Johnson who, according to Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune, shares “mutual interest” in Utah.

After signing a one-year deal with the Heat last summer, Johnson had a breakout season. He averaged 12.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game, and shot 34 percent from 3-point range, all career highs. As a point-forward and versatile defender, he was a key part of Miami’s second-half turnaround.

The Heat, who were among Hayward’s choices, are also expected to prioritize re-signing Johnson. According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the team will move quickly.

Even if Hayward had signed in Miami, the organization likely would have tried to retain Johnson even at a minimal cost. Johnson was deeply involved in recruiting Hayward, even attending the Heat’s meeting with him despite being a free agent.

With the Heat $31 million in available cap space, Johnson’s reported interest in Utah could be a bargaining tool on his end. Much like Andre Iguodala’s reported interest in teams other than Golden State earlier in free agency, it could ultimately be players and agents feeling out the market before ultimately re-upping.

At least, that’s what Heat fans hope.
