3. Paul George
Westbrook’s newest teammate bolted from Indiana and still has dreams of landing in Los Angeles but that shouldn’t deter Miami from making their pitch to George after his time in Oklahoma City comes to an end.
While the jury could still be out on whether George is a true number one option, he is still one of the most versatile scorers in the league and immediately injects offense to any lineup. Whether he is your top option or not, George is a max player and will command that type of money.
At 27, he’s entering his prime and would flourish in the Heat’s system not just on offense but also as a defender.
George’s interest in Miami remains unknown, however. He seems to have his sights set on joining the Lakers but could be persuaded to stay in Oklahoma City if Westbrook decides he too plans on staying. But there is a very real scenario where the Thunder lose both at the end of the season, and teams will be waiting to pounce.
The Heat chased Durant a year ago, and Gordon Hayward this summer. They missed out on both and still have a need at small forward. George would give them a two-way player who could elevate Miami to the top rung of the conference.
If George considers the Heat, Riley and Co. could make a compelling offer. A max deal (if they can clear the space) and a chance at a ring that the Thunder and Lakers (if the stars don’t align) won’t be able to promise.
