Currently on a four-game winning streak, the Miami Heat have found their stride. But where is that success coming from?
Multiple players have stepped up for the Miami Heat. Sometimes, Josh Richardson looks like he has purely taken over. On several occasions, Kelly Olynyk has looked like he could be the rock of this team. But, there’s one player who has really been making a name for himself recently.
Wayne Ellington, the Man With The Golden Arm, has been a huge factor in Miami’s recent turn of events.
The Heat might not be the type of team looking to light up the scoreboard, but you can’t overlook Ellington’s scoring ability. And head coach Erik Spoelstra knows it, giving the guard the green light, time after time. Ellington has had double-digit 3-point attempts in five of the last eight games, proving he’s not afraid to let it fly.
He now sits fifth in the NBA this season in 3-point field goals made.
His sharp-shooting has been huge for the Heat. Whether it’s hitting 8-of-12 from beyond-the-arc against the Dallas Mavericks, or consistently stretching out the defense to open the lane, Ellington makes an impact.
Against the Utah Jazz, Ellington went three-of-six from downtown for nine points. Yet, with only nine points, he was still able to draw out the defense. The 6-foot-4 shooter is so quick around high screens, that the defense has to try and cheat above the screener. This often leaves the defense chasing from behind, giving Ellington the open look.
Not only is the defense playing catch-up, but they also are now behind the offense. Meaning that the one who set the screen, or anyone connected with the screen, can cut to the basket freely. If Miami spaces the floor well, they can even progress the play with Ellington. As the ball handler, he has the speed to continue that play, driving to the rim himself.
Miami has reaped the benefits of Ellington on the offensive side of the ball, but it’s even more applaudable that he’s getting it done defensively as well. Quick on his feet as well with his hands, Ellington has racked up five steals in the last three games.

Ellington might be a reserve, and while that won’t change anytime soon, he’s still an incredibly valuable asset that this team needs.
