It’s a two-way street

The 2018 NBA draft offers the origin stories for a few of the league’s most intriguing characters. Luka Doncic, a basketball demigod, became the steal of the night after the Dallas Mavericks fleeced him away from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Trae Young.

Out in Los Angeles, the 10th pick, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, is redefining the idea of being the best point guard in LA. And then there is Jaren Jackson Jr., the fourth pick who is meshing seamlessly with the Memphis Grizzlies and their league-defining defense.

But lurking in the abyss after the 60th selection were a pair of eventual Heat members who have already made an impact on the team.

Enter Yante Maten and Duncan Robinson, a pair of undrafted rookies the Miami Heat signed to two-way deals over the summer.

Maten is a potential successor to the Udonis Haslem throne of power forward-dom while Robinson is the sharpshooting swingman of the future. Both have earned run in the early days of the 2018-19 preseason, with Robinson getting some minutes in a handful of contests in the regular season.

The Heat have a proven track record with getting two-way players up to par—look no further than Derrick Jones Jr. for a perfect example.

Getting the new recruits in on the ground floor makes for the perfect start to (potentially) a pair of heat lifers’ careers.
