By Duncan Smith
The Miami Heat have their draft night in the books, selecting Tyler Herro in the first round and KZ Okpala in the second. We’ll look at how some of the major outlets graded their picks.
The 2019 NBA Draft is over and done with, and the Miami Heat have a couple young new faces on the roster in the form of Tyler Herro and KZ Okpala, their first and second round draft picks. Herro is a solid shooter and provides wing and guard help, while Okpala provides length and defensive presence.
With the draft in the books, we’ll take a look at how the major outlets graded the Heat’s draft performance in both the first and second rounds.
CBS Sports
Herro: B
Gary Parrish of CBS Sports graded Herro’s selection as a B, praising his shooting potential and remarking that his overall game surely warrants being a lottery pick.
Okpala: B
In his review of the second round of the draft, Kyle Moore graded Okpala’s selection as a B, touting his defensive ability, length and his 7’1″ wingspan.
SB Nation
Herro: B
In Ricky O’Donnell’s draft grade of the first round for SB Nation, he gives Tyler Herro’s selection a B. O’Donnell suggests J.J. Redick may be the ideal career track for Herro.
SI
Herro: B+
For SI, Jeremy Woo views Herro’s selection especially favorably as he grades it with a B+. In addition to his known shooting capability, Woo praises his defensive effort and ability to score off the dribble.
The Ringer
Herro: C
Jonathan Tjarks of The Ringer has a less rosy view of the selection, viewing Herro’s 6’6″, 192 lbs stature as something of a problem, as well as his actual defensive capability falling short of the standards of the Miami Heat.
Bleacher Report
Overall: C
The price for Okpala ended up being a steep one as the Miami Heat ended up sending three second-round picks to the Indiana Pacers in order to pick him at 32. This was a major concern for David Kenyon in his C grade for the overall draft of Tyler Herro and KZ Okpala.
Overall, the aggregate draft grade for the Miami Heat across these major outlets works out to a B-. At this early juncture, it doesn’t look like it will be an all-time draft to remember, but at least Herro has a shot at being a significant contributor next season, and Okpala will have the opportunity to prove himself as well.
