Miami Heat: What you need to know about the Heat free agency so far
By Duncan Smith
The Miami Heat have been one of the more active teams in free agency, trading for Jimmy Butler and sending out Hassan Whiteside, lack of good salary or flexibility be damned. We’ll catch you up on everything so far.
Nobody really thought Pat Riley would sit on his hands this summer, did they? The Miami Heat president has headed up one of the most active front offices so far since the NBA’s free agency period began at 6 PM on June 30th, swinging a deal (still pending) for Jimmy Butler and another sending Hassan Whiteside to the Portland Trail Blazers for Moe Harkless and Meyers Leonard.
The Heat entered the summer not only well over the cap, but into the luxury tax and over the luxury tax apron. Without much in the way of attractive and tradeable contracts, it didn’t look like there was a whole lot of hope to improve the roster, or to at least shake things up.
It turns out, where there is a will, there is a way, and Riley has displayed nothing but will to get things moving.
Given the incomplete nature of the deal with the Philadelphia 76ers for Jimmy Butler, the Miami Heat are far from done making moves both to shed salary and to appropriately comply with the NBA’s CBA. We’ll break down what they’ve done, and what is yet to come as the Heat try to rebuild their roster in advance of the 2019-20 season.
Without further ado, let’s recap what we know so far about the most recent transaction.
