Miami Heat: Ranking each upcoming free agent by priority
2) Meyers Leonard
Remember the Hassan Whiteside saga? Well, do you Heat fans?
It wasn’t until his exit from Miami that the team found a truly upgraded frontcourt. Head coach Erik Spoelstra paired Meyers Leonard (apart of the four-team Butler deal) with Bam Adebayo this season, and they’ve worked well together.
The only issue is that Leonard is headed for unrestricted free agency, after what may have been the best season of his career thus far in his lone year with the Heat. The 28-year old big man posted just 6.1 points and 5.1 rebounds on a 52/42/65 shooting split.
Those numbers may not pop directly off of the stat sheet, but make no mistake: Leonard was an integral part of Adebayo’s growth and the Heat’s success this year.
His ability to stretch the floor as the starting five is a large reason for their success from 3-point land this season. Per NBA.com, the Heat were a top-10 team in every 3-point category this year, including their league-best .383 shooting percentage nightly.
Leonard has already expressed his satisfaction with his role in Miami and who can blame him? His play fits almost seamlessly into the system Spoelstra is running.
Leonard shouldn’t be the kind of guy who breaks the bank, so chances are he’s back for next year.
