With a low-end first-round pick, the Miami Heat should strongly consider Duke University product, point guard Tre Jones.

The reigning ACC Player of the Year, Tre Jones is expected to be off the board within the first-round. After two seasons at Duke University, the point guard has declared for the 2020 NBA Draft to join his brother, Memphis Grizzlies point guard Tyus Jones, in the professional league.

The Duke point guard posted 16.2 points, 6.4 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game this year.

But the immediate draw to Jones’ game is his defense. The 20-year old point guard prospect averaged 1.9 and 1.8 steals in his two years in college respectively. He was named ACC All-Defense and earned the 2019-2020 ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors.

For the Miami Heat, the point guard position is largely up in the air. Goran Dragic is headed to free agency where he’ll no doubt have a number of suitors. And rookie Kendrick Nunn is only due to remain with the team through 2020-2021, where’s he set to make a non-guaranteed $1.6 million.

Targeting a point guard in the upcoming draft may make the most sense for the Miami Heat. Tre Jones is a defensive anchored point guard, with family ties in the league. At 20 years old, no matter the team’s direction, he’ll prove a worthy draft selection.
