After a storied career and multiple championships, Andre Iguodala is talking about retirement, and potentially with the Miami Heat.
When the Miami Heat acquired Andre Iguodala in a deal at the trade deadline, fans knew they were getting an All-Star in the twilight of his career. But in a recent interview with Mark Medina of USA Today, the 37-year old says retirement isn’t too far away:
"“I have about a year or two left, I’m serious this time. I got two left.”"
If this is it for Iguodala, he’s had one hell of a career. After getting drafted 9th overall to the Philadelphia 76ers, he went on to play a crucial role in the Golden State Warriors three championships from 2015-2018. He earned Finals MVP honors for the 2014-2015 title.
Clarifying that he’s got two years left makes a lot of sense, given his contract situation with Miami. The team signed him to a two-year, $30-million extension after acquiring him in February.
He’s played well in his 20 games for the Heat, given his age and the time off he had as a non-member of the Memphis Grizzlies. Iguodala’s averaging 4.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and a block per game as a contributor off the bench for Miami.
His 2021-2022 salary has a team option, which could go either way given the state of the league’s salary cap and whatever becomes of the Heat’s chase for a third All-Star. In the meantime, Iguodala’s going to enjoy the “back nine” of a storied career in South Beach.
And if he gets to play out the 2021-2022 season in Florida, he may just retire here too.
Andre Iguodala and the Miami Heat will look to continue what has been a successful partnership on Wednesday night when they take on the Oklahoma City Thunder.
