The Miami Heat might have the chance to add a dynamic scorer and playmaker to their team. If he becomes available, they should definitely look into it.

They Have A Trade Exception That Expires In February

I know what most of you are saying already. From the minute you saw the headline, you thought to yourself, “how and with what salary to send back?”.

Well, even if you didn’t, I’m here to answer that.

The Miami Heat wouldn’t have to necessarily worry about matching his total salary of eight million if they were to look into the trade. They could use the Trade Exception that they received as they shipped off James Johnson.

What’s a Trade Exception? I am glad you asked.

Here’s the definition according to Spotrac.com.

"Trade Exception becomes available when a team relinquishes more salary than it acquires during a trade. The “credit” balance remains as an exception that can be used within the next year to acquire salary via trade without further relinquishing additional salary."

To simplify it all, the Miami Heat could use that provision to take back Lou Will’s salary without having to ship out that much. That’s the second reason, because they have the means to do it without giving up a ton of resources and if they don’t use it, they lose it anyway in February.
