The Miami Heat are nearing training camp, like all teams. They made a signing on Tuesday for depth in camp and perhaps a two-way contract competitor.
The Miami Heat are continuing to take care of the necessary things in order that they may kickstart their season off shortly. In preparation for training camp, teams must add depth to not only get a good look at the new guys they are bringing in but to ensure they have enough bodies to get a quality look at what they already had.
On Monday, the Miami Heat took another step in that direction. They signed guard/forward Max Strus, who’s played one year in the G-League after playing college ball at Depaul.
Strus did well in his lone G-league season, averaging 18.2 points per game for the Windy City Bulls across 34 minutes per contest. He left a little to be desired from behind the arc, shooting 30.8 percent but when you consider the fact that he hit almost three of the nine he took per game, it really paints a more vivid picture.
The Miami Heat can spot talent a mile away. They signed Max Strus to the roster on Monday, who may simply be training camp depth… or is he?
While Strus could be little more than, again, simply an invite to fill out the training camp roster, he could eventually go on to earn one of the two-way spots the Miami Heat have open. Let’s be real though, you have to think that Gabe Vincent, a guy that saw run with the big club last season, is safe.
What that means is that Strus, Breein Tyree, and Paul Eboua are all essentially competing for that one spot that’s left. May the best man win is what they say, right?
If it means anything, Strus does fit the narrative and mold of guys that they have signed recently, specifically Duncan Robinson. While Strus isn’t as big, physically, he is a guy who can flat out put the ball in the hole it appears and it also appears that he has worked for everything he has gotten.
Like Robinson, who although started out at a Division III school before transitioning into Division I at Michigan, Strus started out at Division II Lewis University in his home state of Illinois before then moving on to a bigger school that was also in his home state in Depaul.
At the very least, he should give the Miami Heat a chance to get a decent look at what they have to work with entering the season. At the very best, he flat out tears it up and leaves the Miami Heat with some tough decisions to make.
We shall see though, won’t we? The season is right around the corner!
