The Miami Heat have seemingly been on the market to add a guy for the last two seasons. While all of their potential targets, or rumored targets at least, have either been moved to other teams or re-signed with their current club, they have to be ready to move on to other plans.
That’s actually been a hot topic recently. Though Victor Oladipo is still a practical and logical target for the Heat, still being on the last year of his current deal though traded to Houston from Indiana, there should be other guys on their list to target as well.
If this past season and the things that have happened have taught us anything, specifically Giannis Antetokounmpo never allowing himself to hit free agency, then it’s that you better have a few ways to attack. Well, another option may have just presented itself.
Should the Miami Heat have Lonzo Ball on their radar?
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic (subscription required), the New Orleans Pelicans are open to trading Lonzo Ball. That actually makes sense if you think about it.
Though likely in the market to move him before he landed there, Eric Bledsoe came over in the Jrue Holiday trade. You also have Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who is just brimming with potential and ready for a more abundant opportunity to blossom.
Combine all that with Lonzo’s lack of outside shooting prowess and Zion Williamson’s need for a ton of paint space, then you have a combustible concoction ripe for a Ball trade. The next question here is this though, is he on the Miami Heat’s radar?
Should he be? He should be.
Here’s the next thing though. Being represented by Klutch Sports, the LeBron James associated sports agency, would Pat Riley deal with that?
It’s a fair question and recent history suggests that he won’t. We all know the story of how they supposedly wanted too much say so inside of the Heat organization when LeBron James was in Miami, but Pat Riley, of course, wasn’t going for it.
Since then, it seems that he would rather not deal with that particular group of people or business collective. That may be the only thing standing in the way, but Lonzo could be a good addition to the Miami Heat.
They need someone who can get it off the bounce, which he can, while they have the shooting to be able to accommodate for his lack of while he continues to try and develop in the area. He is a two-way guard as well, which definitely fits in well with what Miami wants to do.
The Miami Heat should at least look into it. If it won’t cost too much, they should look deeply into it.
