The Miami Heat are in full offseason go mode and everyone knows what that means. You’ll see numerous reports about their interest and links to, pretty much, any and every free agent of merit.
With that though, they do actually have to come out on the other side with additions to their roster. Also, something of note for the Miami Heat in free agency, is the fact that they consistently do the most with less.
What that means here in this scenario for free agency pickups is that though you expect them to land a name or two of a certain caliber, don’t sleep on all else they might do… or be able to do. In all of that and thinking about their needs, they also have a desperate need for a lead guard, who if fortunate enough, is also a very capable three level scorer.
Well, there may be a guy out there who fits that exact role. Also, when it comes to doing more with less, he may also fit that narrative as well.
The Miami Heat need to get creative and thrift to fill out their roster and fill their needs. They need a guy… like Dennis Smith Jr. was supposed to be.
Coming out of college as an electric and enigmatic scoring guard, Dennis Smith Jr., has since seen his stock, fate, and career take a downturn. Averaging 15.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.8 rebounds in his rookie season, he has consistently seen his numbers fall in every year since.
So, why then, should the Heat take a flyer? If you ask some close to the Pistons, his last team and something that has been done, those people might tell you that he doesn’t have it anymore.
Still, why would the Heat take a flyer? Coming into the league, he was supposed to be a ball of athleticism and electricity at the point guard that rivals what Ja Morant does, in example and close enough from an attacking and athleticism standpoint.
The thing about it though is that you liked the thickness of his frame a bit more, while he also may have been a more pure scorer as well. The thing you like now about Smith Jr, even for all of his ineptitude up until this point, is the fact that he is still only 23, hasn’t, honestly, played in a conducive situation for him, and likely, is humbled to the point of actually wanting to do the work now.
What would the Miami Heat have to lose? Nothing, especially if they were just bringing him in to see what he looks like.
With what they need and the potential that has to still be there for a 23 year old, at least a teeny tiny bit, it’s worth a shot. That’s why they should, at the very least, take a flyer on Dennis Smith Jr.
It could be a game-changing move if he’s right.
