Trade rumors are a huge part of every offseason. The Miami Heat are not exempt from this fact by any means of the imagination.
The majority of rumors that have come out thus far are involving players the Heat may look to sign in free agency. However, that doesn’t mean that they won’t be active in the trade market.
Plenty of teams could be looking to shake things up this offseason. If that ends up being the case, the Miami Heat should absolutely look to get involved.
The one downside to making moves is that the Heat don’t have many assets to trade. They only have five players fully under contract for next season.
Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report recently listed one player from every team who is the most likely to get traded this summer. Due to the lack of players available to be traded, they listed Tyler Herro as that player for Miami.
With only five players under contract, Herro emerged as the top candidate to be dealt. Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo are virtually untouchable, while KZ Okpala and Precious Achiuwa don’t have much trade value.
"“The other two [Precious Achiuwa and KZ Okpala] have shown flashes in their brief careers, but Herro is the one with the 2020 Finals breakout on his resume and name recognition to anchor a high-profile trade. And if we know anything about the ambitious Heat, it’s that they tend to favor trades of that ilk.”"
Herro will be entering his third NBA season. The 21-year-old made a name for himself during Miami’s 2020 Finals run, and despite the criticism, actually had a very productive sophomore season.
Despite all this, there are still concerns to be had with Herro’s work ethic and off-the-court antics. Some have questioned his ability to stay focused and put in the necessary work.
Hughes noted this as one reason the Miami Heat could look to trade Herro this summer:
"“The concerns about Herro’s off-court habits could factor into the Heat’s willingness to deal as well.”"
It should certainly be interesting to see how the offseason plays out. Herro is still super young with plenty of room to grow, but he also has a lot of trade value.
The question then becomes whether the Miami Heat want to prioritize winning right now or setting themselves up for the future.
