Miami Heat Best Of 2020-21: Dewayne Dedmon and ‘Ded-Man Dunking!’
Though the Miami Heat had an uneventful and unceremonious end to their 2020-21 season, they had their fair share of great moments throughout. While there are a few that could be mentioned and have been mentioned already, there are a few more out there.
Though they say that April showers brings May flowers, one of the brighter spots or better moments for the Miami Heat this past season, came or had the ability to shine through that April rain. It was Dewayne Dedmon and his ability to come in for Miami and… blossom.
In a small role to start and though one that grew, but never quite to the satisfaction of some fans but that’s another story, he had a major impact. The Miami Heat had been mauled on the glass and at the cup, defensively, the entire season and though he wasn’t the end all be all by his lonesome, he had a major impact in the area for Miami.
The Miami Heat needed a big body and Dewayne Dedmon was just sitting there. Perfect match.
In just 13.1 minutes for the Miami Heat across just 16 games played, Dedmon averaged 7.1, 5.4 rebounds, 0.8 assists, just over a half steal, and nearly a half block per contest. On a per minute basis or extrapolated out to say… just 22 minutes or so a night, that’s major production from a guy that wasn’t even in the league this season until the Heat were able to nab him.
Outside of just the story the numbers tell though, if you had eyes, it was apparent. Dedmon was an instant jolt of energy from the onset, be that the onset of his time with Miami or the onset of his time on the floor on any given night.
He quickly became a fan-favorite and a favorite of the announcers, as it wasn’t hard to see that he was giving his all, wanted to play hard, and left it all out there. Though it isn’t assured, one way or another if the Heat will retain Dedmon’s services, they’d do themselves a huge favor to do so.
He wasn’t afforded a big enough opportunity in Miami this past season and could, potentially, thrive more in a bigger role. In fact, he might be capable of playing beside Bam Adebayo, as he does have the ability to shoot the three a bit (a career 33 percent deep shooter on 1.1 attempts, but 2.4 in his last full season before this one).
Either way, the Ded-Man was a godsend and a pleasure to watch for Miami. That’s how he made the Miami Heat’s best moments of the 2020-21 season.
