Free agents the Miami Heat should avoid: DeMar DeRozan

DeMar DeRozan would not be a great fit with the Miami Heat. Not only would he fit poorly on the court, but financially it wouldn’t make much sense for the Heat either.

The Miami Heat struggled to shoot the ball last year. If it weren’t for Duncan Robinson they would have been one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the NBA.

One of the main goals this offseason should be to put shooters around Jimmy Butler and Ben Simmons. DeRozan is not a shooter by any means.

He has never shot above 34% from deep throughout his entire career. In addition, he hasn’t shot above 26% from three-point range in the past three seasons.

What’s worse is that he rarely even takes threes. His role in the starting lineup would essentially just be what Butler does but without the defense.

On top of that, DeRozan is still a good enough offensive player to command a decent contract in free agency. His offensive skillset just doesn’t match up with what the Heat should be looking for.

He could potentially be decent in a sixth-man role, but he wouldn’t be able to play alongside Butler and Adebayo. They need floor spacers next to them and DeRozan just can’t be that.

The only scenario in which the Heat should consider signing him is if Kyle Lowry wants to play with him again. At that point, signing DeRozan to a one-year, very cheap contract could be okay.

Other than that, however, the Miami Heat should definitely avoid DeRozan this offseason. He just doesn’t fit with their current roster.
