Miami Heat Rumors: Woj reports Heat are frontrunners to sign Kyle Lowry
By Jack Simone
When Adrian Wojnarowski, better known as simply “Woj” to NBA fans, tweets out a rumor it is often bound to be true. Well, the Miami Heat were involved in one of his latest spoilers.
On draft night, since he is not actually allowed to spoil the picks, he tweets out something along the lines of “this team has this player at the top of their board.” This time he phrased the rumors as, “are positioning themselves to become frontrunners.”
According to Woj, the Miami Heat are the “frontrunners” to sign Kyle Lowry when free agency opens tomorrow night. The deal will supposedly be done in the form of a sign-and-trade involving Goran Dragic and Precious Achiuwa.
A sign-and-trade for Kyle Lowry could be in the works for the Miami Heat
Wojnarowski noted that Lowry has been intrigued at the proposition of joining the Heat and Jimmy Butler for a long time. He and Butler have a long-standing friendship that likely played a large part in his decision this summer.
Though some may be hesitant to make such a signing due to age or money, Lowry would undoubtedly elevate the ceiling of next year’s Heat team. His veteran leadership and offensive game alone will make a positive impact.
Last season, Lowry averaged 17.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game. He shot 43.6% from the field and 39.6% from three-point range.
The Miami Heat were one of the worst offensive teams in the NBA last year, so having Lowry to run point would certainly help. Though nothing is official quite yet, a tweet from Woj means things are trending in the right direction.
Miami was one of three teams expected to be at the forefront of the chase for Lowry this summer. The other two were the Mavericks and the Pelicans.
When and if this deal goes through, the Miami Heat will form a big three capable of competing with any other team in the NBA – Lowry, Butler, and Bam Adebayo.
However, the deal will likely be in the range of $25-$30 million per year, based on some previous reports. If this is the case, Pat Riley will have to get crafty with the way he fills out the rest of the roster.
We’ll see what happens, but as of now, Woj is making it seem as though Lowry will be in South Beach next season. Deals can be officially agreed upon starting tomorrow, August 2nd at 6:00 p.m.
