Bargain bin free agents for the Miami Heat to target: Isaac Bonga
Isaac Bonga is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer as the Washington Wizards decided not to extend him a qualifying offer. The 6-8 point forward could be worth a look in free agency.
He struggled last year, notching very poor shooting splits, but in the 2019-20 season, he showed some real potential. If the Miami Heat can develop him into the best possible player he can be, he would give them some great minutes off the bench.
In the 2019-20 season, Bonga averaged 5.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists. He shot 50.4% from the field and 35.2% from three-point range.
If he could average these numbers on a higher volume, he would be a decent bench piece. Obviously, he has a lot of work to do, but that’s what bargain bin free agents are all about.
Bonga is listed as a small forward/point guard and could be a decent secondary playmaker if used correctly. Once again it’s important to note that he has a lot of room to grow, but the outline of a solid player is there.
The most important thing Bonga can do to earn a shot is show improvement in his shooting abilities. Though he shot nearly league average two years ago, that number fell to 27.7% last year.
Regardless, the wing is only 21 years old, so he has plenty of time to improve. If the Miami Heat can manage to get the most out of Bonga, he could end up being a solid option.
