Miami Heat free agency grades: Kyle Lowry
On paper, Kyle Lowry is the perfect fit for the Miami Heat. He’s a great point guard who can shoot, pass, and defend the perimeter well.
Unfortunately, they had to trade away Goran Dragic in order to bring him to Miami, but that’s just the way it goes. Lowry is primed to be a game-changer in Miami.
His offensive game alone should help transform the Heat’s offense. His shooting and playmaking will not only give them another option on that end, but he’ll also be able to make those around him better.
Lowry will be the best point guard that’s played for the Miami Heat in a long time (unless you want to count LeBron James). His presence elevates the ceiling of this team by a lot.
However, there are some downsides to the signing as well. Lowry is already 35 years old and the Heat are going to be paying him a boatload of money.
He’ll make around $30 million a year, meaning by the end of his contract Miami will be paying a 39-year-old point guard that much money. That’s a dangerous concept.
Though Lowry has shown no signs of slowing down, point guards don’t usually age well. If he starts to regress, the signing could look like an overpay very fast.
Right now, the deal seems like a no-brainer, but it has the potential to backfire if Lowry doesn’t age well. The Miami Heat will certainly be a better team because of Lowry next year, but this signing could have future implications.
