Believe it or not, but training camp is right around the corner and the Miami Heat do have a roster spot available. More than likely, Miami will use that roster spot for a buyout candidate during the season.
But, would it be worth it for Miami to look at free agent, Isaiah Thomas? For the first time since his Boston days, Thomas appears to be near his healthiest.
"“I’m moving like I did before the injury,” Thomas says, “and that was the biggest thing I wanted to show people—that I didn’t lose a step.I’m still quick and fast. I’m still powerful. I’m able to move again.” ( SI Howard beck)"
That’s what Thomas had to say back in February. He told it to Howard Beck of Sports Illustrated.
We all know what Thomas has dealt with over the past couple of years. So, regardless of his play on the court, it is nice to see him healthy if you’re a fan of the game.
Should Miami take a chance on the once-dynamic little guy? Is he worth is to them?
The Miami Heat have a roster spot and with their offensive challenges in past seasons, could always use another guy there. Is Isaiah Thomas the guy though?
Miami will be using the final roster spot at some point, but I do not think Thomas is the guy Miami should be looking at. Miami’s bench could add a little more scoring punch.
That is where Tyler Herro comes in to play. This is a big year for Herro, who needs to provide buckets off the bench for Miami.
Personally, I think Herro will have a good year off the bench. Herro is going to be in the game to make shots and catch fire from three.
He will need to run the second team and likely, lead them in scoring. Because of Herro being a key part for Miami, that’s why I don’t see Thomas and Herro working together on the second unit.
Miami’s focus on defense leaves a ton of questions, specifically. Herro struggles on defense already and having Thomas on the floor at the same time would be awful for Miami.
At this point in Thomas’s career, would it be awful for Miami to bring him on a training camp deal? No.
Why not give Thomas a look to see if he still has that shiftiness? Yeah, Head Coach Erik Spoelstra could stagger the Thomas/Herro minutes, but is it really worth it?
Thomas would have the ball in his hands a lot and would put up shots, leaving Herro with less shots. As stated before, that’s not such a good things, again, with this being a big year for Herro coming off the bench.
Thomas doesn’t help Herro on either end. It may all boil down to that for me.
Also and with Miami not bringing back Kendrick Nunn, why would they, then, want to bring in Thomas, who has a similar game as Nunn? It’s clear that Miami really wants to see Herro make the most of his year and a ton of opportunity.
I’d love Thomas to get one more chance on a roster, I also just can’t see Thomas fitting with this current Miami Heat team.
