Miami Heat: Coach Spo Has Been Righteous Often, But Has Never Won COY

The Miami Heat are almost guaranteed to win one of the following three awards. Why is it so likely that Erik Spoelstra will win the Coach of the Year Award?

3. Coach of the Year- Erik Spoelstra

Let’s break it down.

The Coach of the Year Award is often given to the coach whose team exceeds expectations during the regular season. Well, so far, the Miami Heat have done exactly that.

They are currently the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. While others were expecting Brooklyn or Milwaukee to be sitting atop the East, the Heat have been hiding out of the spotlight and snatched the spot to begin the season.

The Heat were expected to be a top team this year, but no one expected them to be the number one seed in the East. If they are able to pull this off, it would almost guarantee that Coach Spo wins the award.

The only reasons the chance of winning this award is not ranked number one on this list are based on how voters view Miami’s success this year. First, it will be rather difficult to maintain the one seed but the Heat look unstoppable right now, so they could actually do it.

Second is whether voters truly view the Heat’s season as an overachievement of their expected number of wins. As previously stated, everyone in their right mind knew the Heat were going to be good.

The Heat are always a good team. So, will their win total be enough to sway voters if those people already believed they would be near the top?

In 12 seasons as the coach of the Miami Heat, Erik Spoelstra has never won the Coach of the Year Award, likely for the exact reason stated above: the Heat are always good. It would be pretty special for him to finally win the award, because he clearly deserves it.

Despite never winning the award, the majority of NBA GMs voted during the offseason that Coach Spo is the best coach in the NBA. Rightfully so.
