Miami Heat: Should They Pursue DeMarcus Cousins Now That He’s Free?
The idea of DeMarcus Cousins being signed by the Heat has been floating around since the 2019 NBA Season.
After the Heat traded Hassan Whiteside to the Portland Trail Blazers as a part of the four-team trade that sent Jimmy Butler to Miami, reports came out that Miami was interested in signing the then 29-year old veteran after his stint with the Warriors.
Cousins agreed to a one-year deal at $3.5 million with the Lakers, joining LeBron James and Anthony Davis. However, he was waived nine months before the Lakers won the 2020 NBA title.
With Cousins being a free agent once again, teams around the league are expected to have interest in a big man. It wouldn’t be a shock to see the Miami Heat express an interest in signing the 31-year old veteran center.
That’s, especially, after the recent injuries to starting and main backup centers, Bam Adebayo and Dewayne Dedmon.
If the pair could unite, the Heat would be able to address their need of size at the paint. Cousins is an inside threat on both the offensive and defensive ends, and though he’ll never be confused for Rudy Gobert as a rim protector, his sheer size acts as a barrier between his man and easy rim looks.
He also has a decent career-shooting percentage from behind the arc as well. He shoots about 33.1 percent from the three-point land over his career.
There are a few reasons to be interested in the guy, honestly. How could or would they go about getting it done though?
